HISTORY

Hartsbourne dates as a Golf Club from 1928 when it was founded by Members of Wembley Golf Club whose course had been
acquired by developers.

The Course was designed by Messrs Hawtree & J.H. Taylor and named Hartsbourne Manor. The name "Hartsbourne" means clear water stream, of which there are many.

In 1947 Mr C. J. Stillitz acquired the Club and became the Founder/Owner and renamed it Hartsbourne Country Club.

The Members Club in its present form dates from October 1966.

Records of the original house date back to the early 1300's. In the early 18th Century it earned the unsavoury name of "Thieves Kitchen", the owner being a notorious receiver and fence. It is
said that Dick Turpin used to pass his plunder to the "Hartsbourne Fence" and used the secret brick tunnel that formerly ran from the house to the stables.

Since 1928 the course has undergone many changes. It extends to 27 holes and remains in play to a high standard throughout the year. The course has a state of the art irrigation system and the fairways are in exceptional condition.

In 1953, John Hunt was appointed as the Club`s professional and his family have retained an association with the club for more than 50 years. Both of his sons, Bernard and Geoffrey represented Great Britain in the Ryder Cup and Geoffrey held the position of the Club`s head professional for many years.
